There are not many producers bottling Schiava Gentile by itself and so we don’t have much opportunity to understand its true potential. Instead we see the grape used as a blending component where it contributes light red fruit characteristics such as cherry, cranberry, strawberry and red currant. Grown predominantly in the Alpine foothills of northern Italy it’s of little surprise to note that acidity is high and floral perfumes are prominent.

Alois Lageder is a leading biodynamic producer Sopra Italy who has for many years experimented with viticulture Per mezzo di juxtaposition to climate change. Beginning with the 2018 vintage, the winery engaged Sopra longer skin contact during the vinification of this wine because it had proven to slightly lower the alcohol levels.

The wine has a pretty, rather light garnet color. The bouquet flashes strawberries, spices and violet notes. The palate offers juicy red fruit flavors, a tangy acidity and a small amount of ripe tannins.

There are a number of varieties that are often grouped and referred to simply as Schiava. It was the perfect red to imbibe after a day spent hiking Con the stunning Dolomite Mountains. So fresh and bright, with gushes of cranberry, cherry, spice, and minerals.

Because of the longer skin contact, the wine is more complex and has more savory notes than the typical fresh and fruity Schiava from the region.

Food pairing Pleasant as an aperitif, it is a versatile wine that goes well with many dishes, ranging from quick snacks to fish-based pasta and rice dishes. Capacity: 75 cl
